Helping Paws is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization founded by Dr. Craig Mohnacky providing veterinary care for military families in need; including routine and more complex medical and surgical procedures. The program is open to all active, retired and disabled veterans of war, who possess family pets or service dogs. Dr. Mohnacky’s commitment to Helping Paws has earned him the San Diego Military Advisory Council Service Award, Channel 10 News Leaderships Award, Henry Schein “Cares” Award, and the LEAD 10 San Diego Visionary Award for dedicated service to the San Diego military community.
Our purpose is to keep military families united with their pets by providing financial assistance so no pet is prematurely relinquished to a humane facility, or worse yet, undergoes euthanasia due to financial constraints (economic euthanasia). A pet in a military household can sometimes be the only source of stability because of demands put on these families. Studies demonstrate both the emotional and physical benefits that pets can bring to their owners by lowering blood pressure, circumventing suicide rates, and creating an increased sense of purpose. Another goal is to expand the Helping Paws Program with your help. Through the Pet Care Rewards Program Helping Paws receives 2% back on every dollar spent. It is our challenge to spread this program nationwide and create opportunities for other veterinary practices to help all military families and their pets!
